Oct 11 (Reuters) - Women taking multivitamins don't live longer than those who get their nutrients from food alone, according to a U.S. study that found they in fact appear to have slightly higher death rates.

Vitamins and Supplements: Do They Work?

Vitamins and Supplements: Do They Work?

The picture is mixed, but thumbs up for vitamin D and calcium

Vitamins and dietary supplements are big—more than 110 million Americans forked over a collective $28 billion in 2010 on little bottles of would-be health magic. Research is unclear, however, on whether shoring up your diet with extra vitamins, minerals, and other supplements helps or hurts—in the short run or in reaching for the century mark.

Taking multi-vitamin pills 'does nothing for our health'

Taking multi-vitamin pills 'does nothing for our health'

  • Research shows vitamin takers are just as likely to develop cancer or heart disease as those who take no tablets

New research shows that taking supplements can actually harm you
New research shows that taking supplements can actually harm you
They  are a daily essential for millions of Britons hoping to ward off ill-health.
But despite the millions of pounds spent on vitamin pills, they do nothing for our health, according to a major study.
Researchers spent more than six years following 8,000 people and found that those taking supplements were just as likely to  have developed cancer or heart disease as those who took an identical-looking dummy pill.
And when they were questioned on how healthy they felt, there was hardly any difference between the two groups.

News Keeps Getting Worse for Vitamins

This week, researchers reported the disappointing results from a large clinical trial of almost 15,000 male doctors taking vitamins E and C for a decade. The study showed no meaningful effect on cancer rates.
Another recent study found no benefit of vitamins E and C for heart disease.
In October, a major trial studying whether vitamin E and selenium could lower a man’s risk for prostate cancer ended amidst worries that the treatments may do more harm than good.

Kids Nutrition

If you haven't already heard, I have my 9 year old grand son staying with me for a few months.  As you can imagine it is wonderful and a challenge all at the same time!  He is truly a sweet heart and we are enjoying this time together!  Before he came, I was nearly completely eating vegetarian.  I used to coach parents that kids will eat what you eat.  And I still believe that!  However, if you are making this change at 9, 10, 11 years old or have a teenager - this is a challenge to put it mildly!  My Braeden desires, pizza, Mac and cheese, hot dogs, hamburgers and spaghetti.  That's it! So we are making a few deals and a compromise.  One compromise is that he try 2 bites of whatever veggie I have cooked.  Also, I am really getting him more involved in the education and the choices.  When we go to the grocery store I have him pick up the white bread and the wheat bread and ask him what he notices. Is the white bread heavier or lighter? Do you want your muscles to be mushy like the white bread or firm like the wheat bread?  And we have a deal that he eats his Juice Plus Complete meal replacement shake with the Juice Plus powders of fruits, vegetables and berries for breakfast every morning!

If you have been to our health education classes, you recognize, this is Dr. Wm Sears, famous pediatrician and on the board of directors of our Children's Health Study, from his DVD, "Nine Simple Steps".  If you would like to view this DVD, just let me know.  Also, I have purchased a tower garden and I have him help me every day to water and watch and pick the produce.  Guess what?  This is working! He is learning more about how his body works and he is willing and excited to try new things!

However, after seeing him woof down the mac and cheese, and the pizza and soda from his last 2 school events, I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels that I know he is getting the nutrition of 26 fruits, vegetables and berries in his little body every day!

Now off to the YMCA skate boarding park we go!

Please come to our next lunch and learn what you can do to improve the nutritional status of you and your family's health!

Health Benefits of Brocolli require the WHOLE FOOD!

Health Benefits of Broccoli Require the Whole Food, Not Supplements

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2011) — New research has found that if you want some of the many health benefits associated with eating broccoli or other cruciferous vegetables, you need to eat the real thing -- a key phytochemical in these vegetables is poorly absorbed and of far less value if taken as a supplement.

I am so glad I am eating Juice Plus - fruits and veggies in a capsule - to get the whole food nutrition of 26 fruits, vegetables and berries!  AND, I am so happy my grand children are getting this nutrition for FREE!
